IndieCade 2010 Finalists: Socks, Inc (Jim Babb/Data Played)

I think I've realised something... I'm pretty sure the IndieCade finalists for this year aren't just ordered alphabetically, but also by how mental they are, from perfectly normal to utterly insane. Socks, Inc backs up this theory - it's an online world for socialising, in which you create stories by taking videos and pictures of your hand with a sock on it.

Set in a Willy Wonka style factory and dubbed 'World of Sockcraft' by its developers, Socks, Inc first asks you to create your sock puppet in real life. You must then complete missions by acting out a story with your sock puppet, then uploading the results to the game for others to see.

At the IndieCade show, there will be a Socks, Inc sock puppet creation workshop, where the creators will show you how to make a great sock puppet, create an online account, then complete the first few missions. Maybe I'm just not with the times, but I find all this very strange indeed. In any case, if you want to check the game's progress out, head over to the official site.

2010 Game Developers Choice Online Awards Opens Audience Award

Game Developers Choice Online Awards organizers have announced the opening of the Audience Award, encouraging online game fans worldwide to vote for their favorite persistent online game from now until September 24th.

The winner of the Audience Award will be revealed at the Choice Online Awards ceremony, to be held on the evening of October 7, 2010 as part of the 2010 Game Developers Conference Online (GDC Online), which is taking place at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas October 5-8.

The first-ever Game Developers Choice Online Awards - a sister event to GDC's notable annual Game Developers Choice Awards in San Francisco - is the first award ceremony honoring the accomplishments of the creators and operators of online games.

Those voting for the Audience Award simply have to enter the name of the game and a valid email address to receive an email and confirm their vote. They may pick from any currently-operating persistent online game, whether it be a subscription MMO, free-to-play web game title, social network game, or anything else.

A good starting point to consider picks might be recently announced nominees of the Game Developer Choice Online Awards, which run the gamut of online titles. These developer-nominated titles span from expansive and hugely popular MMOs such as Blizzard's World of Warcraft, through addictive social network-based titles like Farmville by Zynga, to breakout titles like Riot Games' critically acclaimed League of Legends.

More information about the Game Developers Choice Online Awards is available at the official website for the awards. GDC Online -- part of UBM TechWeb, as is this website -- takes place in Austin, Texas from October 5-8, 2010. Information about sessions and still-open registration for the show is available at the GDC Online website.

GDC Vault Debuts Invitation-Only Beta For Individual Subscribers

The GDC Vault, which holds hundreds of streaming video, audio and slides-based presentations to the multiple Game Developers Conference yearly events, has opened Beta invitations to individuals for a yearly subscription.

Though it was available to All-Access GDC Pass holders and to group subscribers over the past few months -- and entire studio and school subscriptions are still available, a limited-time Beta offer for individuals is now in place.

For a limited initial period only, the invite-only GDC Vault individual subscription Beta will offer a year's access to hundreds of specially recorded videos of the top Game Developers Conference talks, for less than the price of a GDC Main Conference pass.

The free section of GDC Vault showcases just a fraction of the content recorded by GDC organizers, with Vault subscription-only audio recordings currently stretching back to GDC 2004, and subscriber-exclusive synced video, audio and slides starting during GDC 2009.

With the majority of the content from Game Developers Conference 2009 and every GDC event in 2010 to be recorded in video form, a total of nearly 400 hours of GDC talks are already available to Vault subscribers, allowing those who missed out on specific programming, design, business, art, or audio talks to catch up in full.
